Connective Tissue Flashcards
What are the special types of CT?
Adipose, cartilage, bone, hematopoetic
What are the functions of connective tissues?
- Structural framework of the body
- Protection
- Supports and interconnects other tissues
- Energy storage
- Transport fluids, cells, and dissolved chemicals throughout the body
- Defense against invasion by microorganisms
What do fibroblasts do?
Produce collagens, proteoglycans, and glycoproteins
What do mesenchymal cells do?
They are the connective tissue stem cells
What do adipocytes do?
Store and release fats
What do chondrocytes do?
Produce and maintain cartilage components
What do osteoblasts do?
Produce bone compartments
What do hematopoietic stem cells do?
Produce red blood cells and immune cells
What is the most common type of collagen in the ECM?
Type 1
What is the stretchable fiber
Elastin
What do reticular fibers do?
Forms the supportive meshwork
What type of collagen is found in reticular fibers?
Type 3 collagen
What is a pathology that causes weak collagen fibers?
Scury and Ehlers-Danlos
What is a defect in elastin, more specifically fibrillin-1?
Marfan’s Syndrome
What are the principal targets of Marfan’s?
Ocular, skeletal, and cardiovascular
What are the cardiovascular anomalies with Marfan’s?
Dissecting aneurysms and mitral prolapse
What is CD44?
Hyaluronate receptor
What is the backbone to which the ECM connects?
Hyaluronan
What is another name for embryonic connective tissue?
Warton’s jelly
What is a low density tissue with both fixed and wandering cells?
Areolar
What is fat containing tissue?
Adipose
What is rich in reticular fibers and forms an open frame work to create a supportive mesh for holding free cells
Reticular
What is characterized by fibers deposited in a random pattern? Where is it found?
Dense irregular CT, dermis of the skin
What is characterized by fibers deposited in a highly regular pattern? Where is this found?
Dense regular CT, tendons connecting skeletal muscle to the bone
What is rich in elastin fibers?
Elastic connective tissue
What kind of connective tissue is found beneath membranous epithelia and around blood vessels, muscles, and nerves?
Loose connective tissue
What functions to support and bind other tissues, hold body fluids, and defend against infection ?
Loose connective tissue
What forms an open framework to create a labyrinth for holding free cells?
Reticular connective tissue
Where is reticular connective tissue found?
Liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes, and spleen
What has a tightly packed ECM and interwoven collagen fibers running in a random pattern?
Dense irregular connective tissue
In what connective tissue are fibroblasts the principle cell type?
Dense irregular connective tissue
Where is dense irregular connective tissue found?
Dermis of the skin, capsules that surround internal organs, perchondrium and periosteum, fascia
Where is dense regular CT found?
Tendons, ligaments, apnoeuroses, dense fascia, joint capsules
What is characterized by an ECM of tightly packed, regularly arranged collagen fibers?
Dense regular CT
What has a wavy appearance when not under tension?
Dense regular CT
What CT type is poorly vascularized?
Dense regular CT
Where is elastic CT found? What does it contain?
Blood vessel walls, bronchiole tubes, and special ligaments (ligamentum nuchae); high proportion of elastic fibers
