Connective tissue Flashcards
What are the primary functions of connective tissue?
Support, binding, protection, insulation, fuel storage, transport blood
What are the characteristics of connective tissue?
- Common embryonic origin
- Varying degrees of blood supply
- Extracellular matrix
(c.t) Element: Ground substance
Fills up space between cells; makes up xtracellular matrix
(c.t) Element: Fibers
- Collagen; strongest/tough; provides strength
- Elastic fibers; long, thin, allowing stretch
- Reticular: short, fine, branching, forms networks
What are blast cells?
Secretes ground substance
Fibroblast cells?
Found in connective tissue
Chondroblast cells?
Found in cartilage
Osteoblast cells?
Found in bone
Cyte cells?
Less active form of blast cells; mantains matrix
Other cell types
Fat cells, WBC’s, RBC’s, mast cells, and macrophages
What is Cartilage?
Matrix secreted from chondroblast & chondrocytes; Avascular; gets nutrients from membrane
What is hyaline cartilage?
Found in tips of long bones, nose, trachea, and larynx
What is elastic cartilage?
Has more elastic fibers; found in ears and epiglottis
What is fibrocartilage?
Strong; found in intervertebral disc area and knees
What are the features of asseuos(bone) tissue?
- Supports and protects body
- Stores fat
- Has more collagen
- Inorganic calcium salts
- Osteoblast produces matrix within
* Osteyocytes mantains matrix
