Bone classification & other Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 7 functions of bone?
A
- support
- protection
- movement
- mineral & growth factor storage
- blood cell formation
- triglyceride (fat) storage
- hormone production
2
Q
What is the axial skeleton?
A
Axial skeleton: long axis of body; skull, vertebal column, rib cage
3
Q
What is the appendicular skeleton?
A
Appendicular skeleton: bones of upper & lower limbs; girdle attaching limbs to axial skeleton
4
Q
What are long bones?
A
- longer than they’re wide; bones of appendages
- ex. humerus, radius, ulna, fibula, femur, tibia
5
Q
What are short bones?
A
- cubed shaped; sesamoid: bones grow inside a tendon (patellar)
- ex. phalanges and tarsals
6
Q
What are flat bones?
A
- thin, flat, and slightly curved
- ex. sternum and scapula
7
Q
What are irregular bones?
A
- complicated shaped
- ex. vertebrae and oscoxae
8
Q
What is the diaphysis?
structure of long bone
A
- tubular shaft
- forms long axis of bone
- consist of compact bone; surrounds central medullary cavity
- filled w/ yellow marrow (in adults)
9
Q
What is the epiphyses?
structure of long bone
A
- on both ends of long bones
- consist of compact bone (externally)
- consist of spongy bone (internally)
- articular cartilage covers joint surfaces
10
Q
What is the epiphyseal line?
structure of long bone
A
- between diaphysis and epiphysis
- where bone growth occurs
- called growth plate
11
Q
What is wolfs law?
A
- bones adapting to the response and demand you put on them
