Connective Tissue Flashcards
What do matrix producing cells do?
originate locally and stay in the tissue
What do fixed/intrinsic cells do?
originate from hematopoietic cells then migrate to the connective tissue where they remain (defensive)
What do wandering cells do?
wander in, stay for a short time, then leave or die (defensive)
What are the functions of macrophages?
antigen presenting, enhanced immune mediated phagocytosis, tumor resistance, secrete enzymes and cytokines
What are the major components of basophilic granules?
histamine and heparin
What do plasma cells do?
synthesize and secrete Ig with single specificity
What are adipocytes
specialized cells for the storage of neutral fats
What is type 1 collagen?
90% of body collagen
found in fibrous supporting tissue
resistant to force, tension, and stretch
what is type 2 collagen?
found in cartilage
resistant to pressure
What is type 3 collagen?
found in reticular fibers
What is type 4 collagen?
found in basement membranes (mesh-like)
What is type 7 collagen?
found in anchoring fibrils
linked to basement membrane
What is the basic protein unit of fibrillar collagen?
Tropocollagen (glycine + proline + hydroxyproline)
This aggregates to form fibrils w/ cross striations
what type of collagen are reticular fibers?
type 3
what are the 2 structural elements of elastic fibers?
core of elastin (rich in glycine and proline) and network of fibrillin microfibrils
