First week of development Flashcards
At ovulation, granulosa cells do what?
Some stay with the oocyte and form the corona radiata and some stay in the ovary and form the corpus luteum to secrete progesterone
where does fertilization occur?
In the ampulla of the uterine tube
What must happen to spermatozoa before they can fertilize an oocyte?
capicitation (removal of glycoprotein coat and seminal plasma proteins)
What are the three phases of fertilization?
penetration of the corona radiata
penetration of the zona pellucida
Fusion of the oocyte and spermatozoa membranes
What does the head and tail of the spermatozoan entering the cytoplasm of the oocyte trigger?
resumption of the 2nd meiotic division
arrangement of male and female pronucleus
replication of pronucleus to restore diploid number
What are the cells of the zygote called?
blastomeres
What happens to the blastomeres at the 8 cell stage?
form tight junctions and the inner and outer cells separate
What happens when spermatozoa contact the oocyte PM?
Oocyte releases enzymes that alter the PM so no more sperm can enter
What happens at the 16 cell morula stage?
The inner and outer cell masses form
It enters the uterine cavity and fluid fills the inner cell mass forming the blastocele
What is a blastocyst?
The stage of the embryo after the formation fo teh blastocele; the outer cell mass= trophoblast, inner cell mass= embryoblast and zona pellucida is gone
