What is Conn’s syndrome?
Hyperaldosteronism leading to retained sodium and increased sodium and water retention
What causes Conn’s syndrome?
Adrenal adenoma
Bilateral hyperplasia
What are the symptoms of Conn’s syndrome?
Hypertension
- Headaches
Hypokalaemia
Why does Conn’s cause hypokalaemia?
Aldosterone causes increased K+ secretion
Tests for suspected Conn’s syndrome?
Plasma aldosterone/renin activity ratio
Confirmation =
24hr urine aldosterone
CT adrenal
Upright posture test
What is the upright posture test?
A huge surge of aldosterone from standing up
What is the treatment of Conn’s syndrome?
Surgical resection of the tumour/unilateral adrenal
No need to start any hypertensive meds as will return to normal after surgery
