Is bacterial or viral conjunctivitis easier to treat?
bacterial! no treatment for viral
What is the discharge observed in bacterial versus viral conjunctivitis?
purulent discharge in bacterial, watery discharge in viral
What is chemosis?
swelling or oedema of the conjunctiva
List two features of gonococcus
Severe purulent discharge, marked lid swelling, chemosis, papillae, periauricular lymphadenopathy +/- Keratitis
What is the investigation for conjuncitivits?
swabs!!
What is trachoma?
bacterial infection that affects your eyes. It’s caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Trachoma is contagious, spreading through contact with the eyes, eyelids, and nose or throat secretions of infected people.
What is the treatment for bacterial conjunctivitis?
chloramphenicol and fudcidic acid
When does conjunctivitis require an urgent review?
neonatal conjunctivitis <1 month due to gonococcal infection
List two complications of gonococcal conjunctivitis in neonates?
vision loss
pneumonia
