Conjunctivitis
 The most common eye disorder; inflammation/infection of the conjunctiva resulting from allergies, bacteria, viruses or STD/STI‘s
Conjunctivitis signs/symptoms
Itching, burning Redness Increased amount of tears Blurred vision possible Sensation of a foreign body in the eye Swelling of eyelid Eyelids may show a crust of sticky, mucopurulent discharge
Chemical conjunctivitis management
Flushing with Saline
Bacterial conjunctivitis management
Purulent discharge Anabiotic drops (Levofloxacin, oflocacin, ciprofloxacin, Tober myosin, gentle myosin ophthalmic solution)
Gonococcal conjunctivitis management
Copious, purulent discharge
Ceftriaxone 250 mg IM + azithromycin
Chlamydial conjunctivitis management
Ceftriaxone 250 mg IM + azithromycin
Allergic conjunctivitis management
Stringy; increase tearing discharge
Oral anti-histamines; refer to allergist/ophthalmologist
**steroids are not ordered and primary care because of possible increased intraocular pressure and activation of herpes simplex virus
Viral conjunctivitis management
Watery discharge
Symptomatic care:
Mild: saline drops
Moderate: decongestant/anti-histamines, mast cell stabilizers, NSAIDs
*sulfacetamide 10% off the Malek solution for bacterial prophylaxis
Herpetic conjunctivitis management
Bright red and irritated
Refer to ophthalmologist
