A
  • Primary infection in 1% off women leading to 20-50% fetal infection
  • reactivation in 10-30% of women that leads to 1% infection.
  • If baby is infected 90% will be asymptomatic (10-15% have long term sequlaee)while 10% will be infected and have long term sequelae.

  • Will present with lymphadenopathy in mothers if infected, early infecton (<4 weeks) is worse for child
  • Classic triad of disease if fetus, opthalmological, cardiac and auditory
  • of those infected 1/3 are fine, 1/3 are institutionalized and 1/3 have to live with their parents

Can transfer to baby and results in heamorhage, can be treated with intra uteral transfusions. Can lead to cardiac failure and aneamia if not treated

Primary infection is terrible in mothers wtih abortion or pre-term labour
- During delivery can be transfered to baby during delivery and cause Encephalitis and wide spread dissemination. Treat mothes with acyclovir or C-section
