What were Woodrow’s major aims for the League?
- All major nations join the league
- They would all disarm
- If a country had a dispute with another, they would take it to the League
Why was posing sanctions almost ineffective for the League?
USA wasn’t in it so would keep trading with the other countries.
What were some positive sides of the League and its structure?
Had special commissions to help stop:
* Slavery
* Improve working conditions
* Help refugees
Had experts that worked to make the best decisions.
What were weaknesses in the structure of the League?
- Too complicated.
- Everything had to be a unanimous decision in order for it to happen.
- No military so therefore lacked teeth
- Britain and France dominated the League
- USA was never a member.
- Assembly only met annually.
What is an example of a success (event) that the League of Nations had?
Aaland Islands [1921]
Disputed between Norway and Finland.
Given to Finland but Finland had to not build any forts on them.
Terms still in place today.
Greece and Bulgaria [1925]
Greek soldier killed on border so Greece invade.
League condemn Greece, force them to pay sanction.
Greece pay £45,000 (old money)

Poland takes newly created capital of Lithuania.
Lithuania asks League for help, League does nothing (France wants Poland on side)
