Safety Requirements for Entering Confined Spaces
Asphyziation
Deprivation of oxygen that can result in unconsciousness and often death.
Permit-Required Confined Space
A space that is:
1) large enough and configured in a way that a worker can bodily enter and perform assigned work;
2) has limited or restricted means of entry or exit;
3) is not designed for continuous occupancy; and,
4) contains an additional hazard, such as a hazardous atmosphere, combustible dust concentration, limited access to fresh air, engulfment potential, an internal configuration hazard, or other serious health hazard.
A solid material composed of distinct particles or pieces, regardless of size, shape or chemical composition, which can present a fire or deflagration hazard when suspended in air or some other oxidizing medium over a range of concentrations
Combustible Dust
The act of being trapped by liquid or a fine flowable solid such as sand and being surrounded or covered completely.
Engulfment
