Conditions of Practice Flashcards
What is the Power Law of practice?
- Rate of improvement is non-linear (logarithmic
- Early in practice of a new task, see rapid improvement in performance
- Slower improvement after more practice
What is MASS PRACTICE?
amount of practice time is greater than the amount of rest between trials
What is distributed practice?
amount of rest between practice trials or sessions equals or exceeds amount of practice time
Research shows that long-term learning result are better with distributed practice or with massed practice?
Distributed practice
Massds practiced may be preferable for discrete skills (walking, riding a bycile, etc)
What is the most important variable of practice:
Amount of practice AKA Dosage: Volume, Duration, Frequency
Constant practice and variable practice
- constant: practice task under same conditions (best for closed tasks)
- variable: practice different variations of a task (best for open tasks)
the interference in performance or learning that occurs when practicing one task in the context of others
Contextual Interference
When multiple skills are practiced within a single session…
high contextual interference
Defined as terminal feedback about the outcome of the movement, in terms of the movement’s goal
Knowledge of Results
feedback relating to the movement pattern used to achieve the goal
Knowledge of Performance

Blocked practice Vs Random Practice:
-
Blocked: perform same task for a block of trials
- Better during early phases of learning
-
Random: change task on every trial
- better retention
- later phases of learning
