define health
is the state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (WHO, 1946)
define wellbeing
is how a person feels about themselves/their lives in relation to the dimensions
define health and wellbeing
the state of a person’s physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual existence, characterised by an equilibrium in which the individual feels happy, healthy, capable and engaged
define illness
a subjective concept related to personal experience of a disease or injury
physical health and wellbeing
- relates to the functioning of the body and its systems; it includes the physical capacity to perform daily activities or tasks
- e.g. body weight, absence of illness, disease and injury, energy levels, complete physical tasks, levels of fitness, immune system, well-functioning body, systems and organs
social health and wellbeing
- relates to the ability to form meaningful and satisfying relationships with others and the ability to manage or adapt appropriately to different social situations
- e.g. Supportive network of friends, supportive and well-functioning family, adapt appropriately to different social situations, effective communication, productive relationships
emotional health and wellbeing
- relates to the ability to express emotions and feelings in a positive way and also include resilience
- e.g. recognise and understand the range of emotions, effectively respond to and manage emotions, experience appropriate emotions in different scenarios, high level of resilience
mental health and wellbeing
- the current state of wellbeing relating to a person’s mind or brain and the ability to think and process information
- e.g. low levels of stress and anxiety, positive self-esteem, process information to solve problems, confidence, use logic and reasoning to form opinions and make decisions, positive thought patterns
spiritual health and wellbeing
- relates to ideas, beliefs, values and ethics that arise in the minds and conscience of human beings
- e.g. sense of belonging, meaning and purpose in life, peace and harmony, developed personal values and beliefs, acting according to values and beliefs
What’s the difference between mental and emotional h&w?
Emotional health and wellbeing relates to appropriately experiencing, identifying and managing emotions, whereas mental health and wellbeing relates to the nature of feelings and thoughts that a person is having
what does subjective mean and give an example
- influenced by or based on personal beliefs
- h&w is viewed in many different ways with different factors influencing that view, therefore its subjective
- these factors include: age, income, fitness, body weight, social network, occupation, education, media, culture
- e.g. indigenous vs year 12
what does dynamic and give an example
- continually changing
- h&w experienced by an individual is dynamic, meaning its constantly changing
- these changes could be rapid or gradual
- e.g. migraine
what does interrelationship mean
- all the dimensions are interrelated
- if one changes, it’s likely the other four will too
define disease
- a physical or mental disturbance involving symptoms, dysfunction or tissue damage
