Conceptions Flashcards
Fertility
SPERM LIVE ~3dys but can live up to 5dys
Ova live 24 hours after rupture from graafian follicle
Avoid sex 3 days after ovulation if prego is not wanted, or several days
takes place in the ampulla (outer third) of the
uterine tube.
sperm successfully penetrates the mem-
brane surrounding the ovum, both sperm and ovum are
enclosed within the membrane, and the membrane becomes
impenetrable to other sperm; this process is termed the **zona
reaction. **
**
Oogenesis
process of egg (ovum) formation
Only 400 to 500 ova will mature during the approx-
imately 35 years of a woman’s reproductive life.
zygote
(the united egg and sperm) are produced
fertilized egg contains 46 chromosomes (22 pairs autosomes/ 1 pair sex chromosomes)
spermatogenesis
male reaches puberty, his testes begin the process
are called spermatocytes.
cells that undergo meiosis in the male
200 to 500 million
sperm
BASAL BODY TEMP
Temperature is taken w/ a special basal body thermometer
Women takes her temp each morning at the same time BEFORE arising from bed
Temp will dip 0.4 °F and spike 0.5 to 1.0 °F until menses
> DIP in temp signifies ovulation (LH surge) will occur within 24 hours
When the body is at full rest
Amenorrhea
absence of menstrual cycle
Dysmenorrhea
Painful period
Endometriosis
Tissue grows outside the uterus, casuing pain
MARULA
A 16-cell solid ball of cells resulting from division of a fertilized ovum, and from which a blastula is formed.
BLASTOCYST
whole structure of the developing embryo
CHORIONIC VILLI
Finger-like projections developing out of the trophoblast & extend into the blood-filled spaces of the endometrium. These villi are vascular processes that **obtain oxygen & nutrients from the maternal bloodstream **& dispose of carbon dioxide & waste products in the maternal blood.
DECIDUA BASALIS
after implantation the endometrium is called the decidua.
FERTILIZATION
usually takes place in the distal third of the fallopian tube → called the ampulla
fertilization requires sperm motility, open cervical os, & patent fallopian tubes
NIDATION
It takes 7-10 days for implantation
HcG
the first hormone that we can check for prego, can be dated 7-10 days after conception, peaks at 2 mos then declines
