components of the nervous system Flashcards
what are the two components of the nervous system
voluntary and involuntary
what is a voluntary nervous system
it consists of two different types of nerve cells called sensory neurons and motor neurons
what is a sensory neurone
It carries messages from the sense organs to the central nervous system
What is a motor neurone
Neurones which carry messages from the central nervous system to tissues such as muscles.
what are involuntary nerves
sympathetic nerves and parasympathetic nerves
what is a sympathetic nerve
Prepares us for action by activating functions needed for survival (fight or flight)
What is a parasympathetic nerve
Restores the body to its normal resting state ( rest and digest)
What is fight or flight
a physiological reaction that occurs when in the presence of something mentally or physically threatening
how do the eyes involuntarily respond in the sympathetic and parasympathetic system
Sympathetic- dilated pupils
Parasympathetic- narrowed pupils
How does the mouth react involuntarily in the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system
Sympathetic- prevent salivation
Parasympathetic- stimulate saliva
how dose your heart rate react involuntarily in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves
Sympathetic- increased airways
Parasympathetic- slowed heartbeat
How do the lungs I voluntarily react in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
Sympathetic- relaxed airways
Parasympathetic- airways narrow
how does the stomach react in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
Sympathetic- stops stomach activity
Parasympathetic- stimulates stomach
How does the bladder react in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
Sympathetic- relax bladder
Parasympathetic- contracts bladder
