Complications of immobiliztion Flashcards
Therapeutic Temp range
40 deg rees for 20 mins
Functions of modalities
alters cell metabolism, each 1.8 deg FArenheight chaing in tissue temp results in 13% up or down in the tissue’s metabolic rate
Superficial heat modalities
/hydrocollator packs, warm whirlpool, PARaffin bath, infrared lamp
Deep heat modalities indications
for fat muscle interface, 2 cm deep, for hip joints
PRimarily used in acute phase
cryotherapy
EFfect of heat on muscle spasm
dec stimulus threshold of muscle spindle, dec the gamme fferent firing rate,
Cold on muscle spasm
Cold decreases local neural activity golgi tendon organ firing rate decreases, muscle relaxes
MYofascial pain and PM
Gen pain for atleast 3 months, presence of nodules for atleast 11 out of 18
CI for heat
acute inflam, abscess,trauma,edema,or hemorrhage
- atrophic skin and scar tissue
poor circulation, poor sensation, obtundation, bleeding, dementia, malignancy, fetus and gonands
Cold and arthritis
no relationship, patients just tend to move less
Due to extreme exposure to cold, produces vasoconstriction and ischemia
Raynaud’s phenomenon
