Complications of fractures Flashcards
what is neuropraxia
temporary conduction block/demyelination. resolves within 28 days
what are the different degrees to nerve injury
1st degree - neuropraxia
2nd degree - axohotmesis
3rd degree - neurotmesis
whats a axhotmesis
nerve cell axon dies distally from point of injury. regenerates 1mm/day
what is neurotmesis
nerve transected. rare. no recovery without surgery
what is volkmans ischaemic contracture
permanent flexure contraction of the hand resulting in claw like hands and fingers. result of untreated compartment syndrome. very painful
what is malunion and its treatment
fracture has healed in a non-anatomical position. n saids or biphosphonates
what is atrophic non union
poor blood supply to fracture site. gap too big and no movement. smoking. systemic disease.
hypertrophic non union
too much movement at fracture site. abundant callus response but failure union.
complex regional pain syndrome
exaggerated pain response after injury. burning neuralgic pain, swelling, skin changes
