Benign tumours of the bone but locally aggressive Flashcards
Radiolucent with increased density around the periphery
GCT
What is the cell of origin of GCT
osteoclast
who does GCT occur in
W>M 25-40s
where does GCT occur and symptoms
long bones
destruction of cortex and medullary and may expand into soft tissue
radiolucent with central density. lesion well circumscribes and may have surrounding sclerosis
osteoblastoma
what does osteoblastoma produce, prognosis and histology
osteoid and woven bone seen
self limiting
irregular bone and osteoid surrounded by osteoblasts
vascular stroma with pleomorphic spindle cells
what are the symptoms of osetblastoma and what does it present as
pain of long duration. swelling and tenderness
red tan in colour with haemorrhagic areas
increased uptake on bone scan
osteoblastoma
what tumour arises from notochord remnants
chordoma
where does chordoma occur
sacral region or base of skull. its a midline tumour
how does a chordoma grow and what are the symptoms
locally invasive and destructive
grows along a plane of least resistance such as a nerve root
can cause spinal symptoms
solitary midline lesions with bony destruction accompanying soft tissue mass - focal calcifications present half the time
chordoma
soft, blue-grey lobulated. gelatinous translucent areas and capsule present
