Complicated cranial nerves Flashcards
Where is the trigeminal nerve’s sensory cell bodies
In the semilunar ganglion
Where does the trigeminal ganglion sit
Meckels cave under the dura in a depression on the petrous part of the temporal bone
what are the general affarents for the lacrimal nerve
lacrimal gland
general affarents from the forehead, anterior part of the scalp, upper eyelid, and frontal sinus come from the
frontal nerve
general affarents from the contents of the orbit, superior part of the nasal cavity, ethmoidal air cells, sphenoidal sinus, dura of the anterior cranial fossa, and superficial sensation from the dorsum of the nose
Nasociliary nerve
General affarents from the root of the nose
Infratrochlear nerve
what are the general affarents of V1 (opthalmic division) of trigeminal nerve
cornea, lacrimal gland, skin of forehead, scalp, eyelids, nose, superior part of nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses (except maxillary), dura of anterior and posterior cranial fossae
what are the general affarents for V2 of the trigeminal nerve (maxillary division)
skin of face over maxilla, lower eyelid, upper lip, side of nose, maxillary teeth and gingivae, nasal mucosa, nasopharynx, maxillary sinuses, hard and soft palate, dura of middle cranial fossa.
Which ganglion is suspended in V2 of trigeminal
Pterygopalatine ganglion
Postganglionic PS: nasal and palatal mucosa, lacrimal gland
Postganglionic S: from ica plexus; same targets
what are some branches of the maxillary nerve
zygomatic, which divides into zygomaticotemporal and zygomaticofascial branch
- infraorbital nerve
- greater palatine
- lesser palatine
What are the GA of V3 division of trigeminal nerve
skin of mandible, lower lip, side of head, lower teeth and gingivae, TMJ, anterior 2/3 of tongue, floor of mouth, parotid gland, dura of middle cranial fossa
What are GE of V3 of trigeminal
muscles of mastication, mylohyoid, anterior belly of digastric, tensor tympani (middle ear), tensor veli palatini
What ganglions are suspended in V3 of trigeminal nerve
Otic ganglion: carries postganglionic parasympathetics to parotid gland
Submandibular gland:
-Preganglionic PS: submandibular gland
-Post ganglionic PS: submandibular and sublingual glands.
What are special affarent of V3
Taste fibers from anterior 2/3 of tongue
What are the general affarents for the fascial nerve
External acoustic meatus and skin of deep part of ear.
What are the general efferents of the fascial nerve
muscles of facial expression, stapedius (in middle ear), post belly digastric, stylohyoid
What are visceral efferents of facial nerve
mucous glands of nasal cavity, hard and soft palate, submandibular and sublingual glands, lacrimal gland
What is a special affarent of the fascial nerve
taste from anterior 2/3 of tongue, palate
What are the branches of the fascial nerve within the fascial canal
- Greater petrosal nerve: carries preganglionic PS fibers for the pterygopalatine ganglion
- The nerve to stapedius: carrries GE for stapedius muscle
- chorda tympani: carries preganglionic PS fibers for the submandibular ganglion and special affarent (taste) for anterior 2/3 of tongue.
- Auricular: Carries general affarent fibers from the EAM and skin of the deep part of the ear.
What are the branches of the facial nerve outside the fascial canal
- Nerve to stylohyoid and posterior belly of digastric (GE)
- Posterior auricular nerve (GE)
- Parotid plexus: muscles of facial expression (GE)
What are the general affarents of the glossopharyngeal nerve (IX)
- Posterior 1/3 of tongue, tonsils, oropharynx, middle ear, pharyngotympanic tube, mastoid air cells.
What is the general efferent of the glossopharyngeal nerve
Stylopharyngeus muscle
What is the visceral affarent of glossopharyngeal nerve
Carotid body and sinus
What is visceral efferent of CN IX
parotid gland
what is a special affarent of CN IX
taste from posterior 1/3 of tongue
What are the branches of CN IX
- Tympanic nerve: provides GA from mucous membranes of middle ear, mastoid air cells and pharyngotympanic tube. It also carries preganglionic PS axons destined for the otic ganglion.
- Pharyngeal branches: Carry GA from the mucus membranes of the oropharynx.
- Carotid sinus branch: Carries visceral affarents from the carotid body and sinus related to blood pressure.
What are general affarents of the Vagus nerve
skin of deep part of ear, auditory canal, dura of posterior cranial fossa, mucosa of larynx and laryngopharynx.
What are general efferents of vagus nerve
levator veli palatini, salpingopharyngeus, cricothyroid, transverse and oblique arytenoid, vocalis
What are visceral affarents of vagus nerve
carotid body and carotid sinus (aortic arch, thoracic and abdominal viscera).
What are visceral efferents of vagus nerve
mucosal glands of larynx and laryngopharynx, thoracic and abdominal viscera.
what is a special affarent of vagus nerve
taste from epiglottis
what are branches of the vagus nerve that are within the jugular foramen
- meningeal branch: Carries GA from the dura of the posterior cranial fossa
- Auricular branch: Carries GA from the skin of the deep part of the ear and EAM.
What are branches of the vagus nerve that are within the neck:
- Pharyngeal branches: Provides GE to most of muscles in pharynx and soft palate, also provides preganglionic PS fibers to the mucous membranes of the pharynx and soft palate.
- Carotid body branch: Conveys VA that has info about blood pressure (from the carotid sinus) and the partial pressure o oxygen and CO2 in the blood.
- Internal laryngeal branch: GA form the superior part of the larynx and also supplies VE to mucous membranes of the superior part of larynx and SA from the epiglottis.
- External laryngeal branch: passes inferiorly and provides general efferents to the cricothyroid and the inferior pharyngeal constrictor muscles.
- Cardiac branches: Supply preganglionic PS innervation to the cardiac plexus.
