Complement Flashcards
1
Q
What are the different complement pathways?
A
Classical
Alternative
Lectin
2
Q
Classical complement pathway
A
when antibodies bind to antigens which activates C1. Eventually C3 is activated and the C3 fragments initiate phagocytosis, cytolysis and inflammation
3
Q
Alternative complement pathway
A
Does not involve antibodies
initiated by an interaction between lipid-carbohydrate complexes on the surface of microbes and complement protein factors - B D and P which activates C3
4
Q
Lectin complement pathway
A
Macrophages that digest microbes release chemicals that cause the liver to produce lectins - which bind to the carbohydrates on the surface of microbes causing C3 to be activated .
