Antibiotics Flashcards
What are the different types of antibiotics?
Beta lactams Aminoglycosides Chloramphenicol Glycopeptides Quinolones Oxazolidinones Sulfonamides tetracyclines Macrolides Ansamycins Streptogramins Lipopeptides
How do Beta lactams work?
Inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis
How do Aminoglycosides work?
Inhibit synthesis of proteins by bacteria by binding to ribosomes causing death
How do Glycopeptides work?
Inhibit cell wall synthesis
How Quinolones work?
Interfere with DNA replication and transcription
How do Oxazolidinones work?
Inhibit synthesis of proteins
How do Sulfonamides work?
Do not kill bacteria but prevent their growth and multiplication. Cause allergic reactions in some patients
How do Tetracyclines work?
Inhibit protein synthesis preventing growth
How do Macrolides work?
Inhibit protein synthesis occasionally leading to death
How do Ansamycins work?
Inhibit synthesis of RNA by bacteria, leading to cell death
How do Streptogramins work?
inhibit protein synthesis causing death
How do Lipopeptides work?
Disrupt multiple cell membrane functions leading to cell death
Egs Beta Lactams
Penicillins - amoxicillin
Egs Aminoglycosides
Gentamicin and Streptomycin
Egs Chloramphenicol
Only used in LIDCs
