New Vocationalism 1980s onwards

A

YTS - training offered to NEETS, one year course for those left school if they didn’t accept this training, benefits taken away
Youth opportunities programme (YOP)
Six month programme included elements of work experience + off job training usually in FE colleges
NVQ’s on the job training, popular with trades jobs, plumber, technician and carpenter
GNVQ’s - training in key sectors e.g. health, leisure and tourism students develop skills for workplace

The Educational Reform Act 1988 - National Curriculum, League Tables, Ofsted

League Tables - Raises competition between schools and colleges, created comp to be the best
OFTSED - quality assurance body created to check level of education suitable through detailed inspection and report published for all parents to see

A

empowered secondary school comprehensives to become specialised in a specific area of academic interest e.g. science, PE

Academisation & Free Schools 2010

A

Schools graded as outstanding can appeal to become an academy, LEA’s removed and funding placed in the hands of government - schools gain autonomy over content teach and teachers employ
Free schools
State funded, set up by parents + community leaders are the teachers
Overall offer parents more choice
