Competition Flashcards
What do carnivores compete for?
Carnivores typically compete for prey (food)
What do prey organisms compete for?
Prey competes to survive, by challenging others for food, but also for their lives against predators
Why are animals who eat a wide range of food more successful?
Because of the wider variety of food options, it makes it easier to find food to keep that animal alive
Why was introduction of rabbits into Australia bad?
It led to extinction of a number of common species who could not keep up with the feeding and breeding of rabbits
Give two reasons as to why animals need to set up and defend territory
Animals require these skills for reproduction. To provide enough space and nutrients for offspring to survive
Give two ways in which males compete for females
Males often fight between each other. Victor is able to mate with females. Males also try to impress females through things like dances, singing etc
Abiotic resources
Plants compete for several abiotic (non-living resources), including light, water, nutrients and space
Give three examples of how plants avoid competitions with each other
- Smaller plants grow very early in the year. This is to give the plant plenty of time to grow and receive sunlight between the branches of trees
- Plants have different types of roots. Shallow roots allow plants to scavenge nearby soil and surface for nutrients. Longer and deeper roots allow plant to access nutrients hidden in soil beneath
- If a plant is growing in shade, it may grow taller to reach more sunlight. May also grow leaves to increase surface area and allow it to absorb as much sunlight as possible
Give two ways in which plants spread their seeds
To successfully reproduce, plants must compete for water, nutrients and space. To do so, many plants scatter their seeds as far as possible, some seeds even have certain adaptations to allow them to travel through the air easier.
Some plants also ‘explode’, use animals or even water to carry their seeds away
