What is the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP)?
Is a research-based and validated instructional model that has proven effective in addressing the academic needs of English learners.
What is Sheltered English Instruction
Is an instructional approach that engages ELs above the beginner level. It develops grade-level content-area knowledge, academic skills, and increased English proficiency.
What strategies are used in Sheltered English Instruction.
Teachers use clear, direct, simple English and a wide range of scaffolding strategies to communicate meaningful input in the content area to students, where the activities connect new content with ELLs’ background knowledge.
What is Total Physical Response (TPR)?
Is an approach to teaching a second language, based on linking listening to physical activities which are designed to reinforce comprehension.
What is the purpose of TPR (total physical response)?
The purpose is to accelerate language acquisition through the use of body movement. E.g., the teacher gives commands and models the action: open your book; stand up; walk to the window. ESL Students follow the direction.
What is Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA) Model?
It’s a model that presents ELLs’ strategies to develop academic English based on cognitive theory, focusing on helping students to comprehend and retain language skills and concepts of the content being taught.
What methods are integrated into the CALLA model?
CALLA integrates instruction in priority topics from the content curriculum, develops academic language skills, and uses explicit instruction for academic tasks.
What are the 5 phases of CALLA model?
Preparation (overview and objectives), presentation (modeling, present strategies and discuss connections), practice (interactive activities), self-evaluation (metacognition n self-assessment), and expansion (students apply what they learned in their own lives).
What is Guided Language Acquisition design (GLAD) Model?
It’s an instructional approach that incorporates a variety of strategies to support English learners, where they simultaneously learn content and acquire language.
What is QTEL (Quality Teaching for English Learners, Model)
Is based on sociocultural and sociolinguistic theories of learning and the central role of language in the learning process. Is based on the premise that ALL students can learn and engage in rigorous instruction regardless of their language proficiency.
What are the two Dual Language Immersion programs under the Bilingual Program, Chapter 89, subchapter BB of TEA.
Dual Language Immersion offers two programs for ELLs: One Way, which identifies LEP in both, English and Spanish, and transfers the students to English only for no less than 6 or more than 7 years; and Two Way, which uses two languages, English and Spanish, for literacy and content instruction, and provides the same academic content and addresses the same standards as other educational programs.
What is Communicative Competence?
Is the ability to use language appropriately in a variety of contexts. This involves using the appropriate forms of language and knowing the social rules of language where the goal is to communicate competently, not the ability to use the language exactly as a native speaker does.
What are the Stages of Language Proficiency for ELLs
Pre-Production: silence period developing mainly listening skills (10 hrs. to 3 months of interaction). Early Production: limited understanding, speaks 1-to-2-word phrases (6 months -2 years). Speech Emergence: expanded production of language, better understanding, (2 -4 years). Intermediate Fluency: vocabulary expansion, higher levels of language used in content areas. Reading and writing activities are incorporated into lessons.
