Competency 002 L1, L2 Flashcards
What is * L1 and L2 Acquisition
It’s the process of acquiring a second language the same way we acquire the first one, in a natural way through meaningful interaction with the environment of the target language.
Natural Approach
Is a method of second language learning that focuses on communication skills and language exposure before rules and grammar, similar to how you learn your first language. Developed by Dr. Stephen Krashen.
Memorization
Is a learning technique that involves the repetition of information, training the brain to retain information, focus, and store foundational concepts to use in the future.
Generalization or Transfer of Learning
Generalization (or transfer) of learning is the ability to apply the learned skills or concepts into novel problems in different contexts and or different people in a daily life. Generalization requires looking past the superficial differences to perceive the deeper relationships.
Metacognition
Is the process of thinking about thinking where students learn to understand, control, monitor and assess their own learning process and performance.
First and Second Language Effect
If the language acquisition of the mother tongue is strong and solid will make a positive effect when learning a second language, but if the acquisition of the first language is weak, it will have a negative effect when learning the second language due to the deficiencies in vocabulary, sentence structure, exposure to life context, etc.
Idiomatic expressions
These are phrases that don’t have literal meaning. Instead, they have a figurative meaning. The figurative meaning is when a combination of words means something different than the individual words.
First Language Interference
- Language Interference is the transfer of elements from the mother tongue to the learning of another. Elements can include phonological, grammatical, lexical, and orthographic. These elements can sometimes impede the acquisition and learning of the target language.
