What is communication?
the exchange of information accomplished by sending and receiving messages
What is effective communication accomplished by?
-proper interpretation of the message
-appropriate and clear response to the message
What is listening?
focusing on what someone is saying and trying to understand it
What is active listening?
-paying attention
-look at person
-acknowledge what is said through facial expressions and body language
-respect, do not interrupt

What are some tips for improving communication with the patient?
- take breaks from typing and look toward patient
- nod head in response
- repeat back info
- summarize what Pt has told you to demonstrate understanding
- ask questions
What should you do if Pt is speech impaired?
ask yes or no questions that can be answered with body language, provide pen/paper
What should you do if pt is visually impaired?
Use very descriptive communication and touch
What is a communication triad?
group of 3 people who work together, 3rd person could be family member or interpreter
When involving a 3rd party in patient care, what must you do?
attempt to get permission from the Pt
What must you do if performing an invasive ultrasound?
you must get consent from patient and patient must have clear understanding
What should you do if the pt is hearing impaired?
use sign language interpreter
What should you do if the pt is confused, disoriented, unconscious, sedated?
communicate with nurse or family member
What should you do if there is a language barrier with pt?
use interpreter, call center, or digital interpreter
When communicating with coworkers on the phone what do you have to do?
-Provide your name and department
-Ask person you are speaking to for first and last name
-Verify person has right to recieve medical info before giving out information
What do you have to document after talking to coworker on phone?
-time of call
-name of person you spoke with
-information/results you provided
What are you never allowed to share with the patient?
