What symptoms do accident victims have?
fainting, trembling, vomiting
What is shock?
failure of circulation that results in inadequate oxygen to tissues, drop in BP and increase in pulse
What are the types of shock?
hypovolemic, septic, neurogenic, cardiogenic, allergic or anaphylaxis, syncope
What is hypovolemic shock?
caused by significant blood loss
What is septic shock?
results from massive infection
What is neurogenic shock?
lack of blood to brain
What is cardiogenic shock?
cardiac failure, not enough blood being pumped to body
What is anaphylaxis shock?
severe allergic reaction, caused by contrast media or food
What is syncope?
fainting, a mild form of shock
What are symptoms of shock?
-restlessness
-increase in pulse
-sweating
-pallor
-weakness
-tunnel vision
-cold clammy skin
-decreased BP
What should you do when you suspect shock during an exam?
-stop procedure
-protect pt from falling
-elevate pt feet
-get help
-roll pt on side
-check breathing, pulse, BP
-cold compress on head
-be ready to peform CPR
What should you do in life threatening emergencies?
- seek immediate assistance
- call code if necessary
- initiate CPR until help arrives
- know location of crash cart, defib, BP cuff
- remain calm
What are the 4 levels of consciousness?
- alert and conscious
- drowsy but responsive
- unconscious, but react to pain
- comatose
What is a concussion?
traumatic brain injury
What are signs of a serious spinal injury?
-extreme back pain or pressure in neck, head, back
-weakness, incoordination or paralysis in any part of body
-numbness, tingling or loss of sensation in hands, fingers, feet, toes
-loss of bladder or bowel control
Before being moved with a spinal injury, what needs to happen?
needs evaluated by physcian
What are the type of fractures?
compound, closed, greenstick, transverse, overriding, comminuted, spiral, compression, depressed
What is a compound fracture?
ends of bone forced through skin
What is a closed fracture?
no break in skin
What are typical behaviors of choking vitctims?
-become agitated
-cannot speak
-may use universal choking sign
When do you use the Heimlich Maneuver?
when someone is choking
What is a CVA?
cerebrovascular accident
