Forms of communication verbal
Verbal communication is the exchange of words
Depends on language. Interpreters may be needed for Cald patients
Nurses use verbal communication extensively
Discussion with patients, family, friends, colleagues and multidisciplinary team
Non verbal communication
Non verbal communication is often termed as body language
However this does not include what we wear and environmental factors
Look for none verbal cues
Look at what is being said
Beware the stoic person who may tell they dont have pain byt they do
Be aware of cultural displays, or lack there of, of pain
Touch
Is the most powerful means of communication
Can give comfort, provide affirmation, give reassurance and emotional support
Be cautious of touching the aggressive person as it may escalate aggression

Include the person and family in all aspects of the process
Encourage the person to be part of the decision making process

Unequal sharing of information
Person shares their health problems and the nurse responds professionally
Relationship is based on the patient’s needs
Social relationships

Information sharing is similar in quantity and type
Introductory phase

Working phase
Longest phase
Work together to meet physical and psychological needs
Interaction is the essence of the working stage
Termination phase
Conclusion of the initial agreement is acknowledged
Might happen at change of shift or discharge
If goals have not been met then progress is acknowledged
Occasionally termination can lead to negative emotional response
