Common Shoulder Problems Flashcards
Outline a traumatic anterior dislocation
Most common type of dislocation and usually results from forced abduction, external rotation and extension. The humeral head comes to lie anterior, medial and somewhat inferior to its normal location and glenoid fossa
Outline a posterior dislocation
far less common than anterior shoulder dislocations and can be tricky to identify clinically and on x-ray. Causes = epileptic seizures, high energy trauma, electrocution
How can an acromioclavicular joint dislocation be classified?
rockwood classification = 6 diff ways – damage to the ligament or torn ligament
What is a fracture?
Broken bone, may be completely fractured or partially fractured, 80% undisplaced, 20% displaced
What is calcific tendinitis?
deposits of hydroxyapatite (crystalline calcium phosphate) in any tendon of the body, but most commonly in the tendons of the rotator cuff (shoulder), causing pain and inflam
What is shoulder impingement?
tendons of the rotator cuff muscles become irritated and inflamed as they pass through the subacromial space, the passage beneath the acromion, can = pain, weakness and loss of movement
How can rotator cuff ligament tears be repaired?
allograft
What is acromioclavicular osteoarthritis?
osteoarthritis at the AC joint, progressively degenerative disease that cannot be reversed, high painful arc, joint tender
Outline glenohumeral osteoarthritis?
osteoarthritis at the glenohumeral joint between proximal humerus, scapular
Describe adhesive capsulitis
painful and disabling disorder of unclear cause in which the shoulder capsule, the connective tissue surrounding the glenohumeral joint of the shoulder, becomes inflamed and stiff, greatly restricting motion and causing chronic pain
