Common Core 106: Navigation Flashcards
Romeo at the Dip
preparing to go along-side
Romeo Closed up
making approach
Romeo hauled down
messenger is in hand
Prep at the dip
15 minute standby for completion of replenishment
Prep closed up
disengaging final station
Prep hauled down
all lines clear
Bravo at the dip
Cease refueling
Bravo closed up
commence refueling
Bravo hauled down
Refueling complete
Advance/Transfer
Advance - total distance traveled from original location when making a turn
Transfer - Total distance GAINED towards the new direction when making a turn
Pivot Point
A point on the centerline about which the ship turns when the rudder is put over
Acceleration/Deceleration
the rate at which the ship increases or decreases speed
Turning Circle
the path followed by the ships pivot pint in a 360 degree circle
True bearing
bearing true north in relation to the North Pole
Relative bearing
Bearing north in relation to the direction the ship is facing.
DIW
Dead in the Water
Head on
When 2 vessels are approaching dead ahead at 000 degrees
Crossing
When 2 ships are heading to the same intersection, the ship viewing the other ships STBD (green) light they have the right of way. the Ship Viewing the other ships PORT (STBD) light, they must alter course or speed to avoid collision.
Over-Taking
when a vessel must pass another from its rear.
Stand-on vessel
the vessel overtaking another. Only required to maintain course and speed.
Give Way Vessel
the Vessel being over taken. must change course and speed.
5 Underway lights
1 Mast (225 degrees) 1 Foward range light (225 Degrees), Stern Light (135 dgerees) Port light (Red, 112.5 degrees) STBD light (green, 112.5 degrees)
Man Overboard
2 pulsating vertical red lights in addition to normal U/W lights.
U/W in Low Visibility
sound 2 long blasts (4-6 seconds) on the ships whistle at intervals that will not exceed 2 minutes.
Small crafts
winds 15-33 knots, red pennant by day, 1 red pennant under white light by night.
Gales
winds 34-47 knots, 2 red pennants on shore only
Storms
48-64 knots
Hurricanes
winds greater than 64 knots
Sextant
device used for navigation by celestial bodies.
Chronometer
time precision used to compare times. Three on board.
Bearing Circle
metal ring used to measure bearing of objects on surface.
Telescopic Alidade
A small telescope mounted on a rotating ring and place on top of the gyro repeater to aid in identifying a surface contact and bearing.
Gyrocompass
consistently points to true North Pole instead of True magnetic north.
Magnetic compass
point to magnetic north
radar
uses reflected radio waves for detection of objects
Fathometer
measures depth of water beneath Keel
SatNav
GPS
Variation
difference between true and magnetic north
Deviation
error between true course and magnetic course
OOD underway
responsible for safe navigation
Conning Officer
gives orders to Helmsman and Lee Helmsman
Helmsman
steers the ship
Lee Helmsman
controls ships speed
Barometer
measures air pressure
Psychrometer
measures humidity in the air
USE GOUGE TO STUDY DAY SHAPES AND FLAGS
LIKE I SAID. USE THE GOUGE
