What is the role of “the Staff”
- helps CDR understand, visualize, describe and direct the battle
- establishes and maintains coordination and cooperation both internally and with staff of higher and lower, and adjacent units
- always focus on helping CDR and supporting units

No the CDR can delegate authority but not responsibility
When do you start seeing staff?
At the BTN and higher
What are the different staff element designators?
COL/LTC get “S”
- i.e. BDE and BN
GO get “G”
- i.e. div/corps/army
Joint Staff gets “J”
- i.e. centcom
What is the role of the Chief of Staff (CofS) or XO?
- trains the staff
- integrates and syncs warfighting plans
- manages CDR critical info requirements (CCIR)
- establishes, manages, enforces staff planning time IAW CDR guidance
- supervises all task assigned to the staff
- ensures that the staff renders assistance to subordinate CDRs and staffs as necessary
Role of the S-1
- manning
- personnel service support
- manage organization and admin of HQ
- coordinates staff responsibilities for special staff officers
I.e. adjunct General, surgeon, chaplain, staff judge advocate
What is the role of the S-2?
Military intel
- collect, process, disseminate intel
- conduct intel prep of battlespace (IBP)
- helps G/S-3 and CDR figure out enemy stuff
Counter intel
- ID and eval enemy’s intel capabilities
Security ops
- supervise the command and personnel security pax
Intel training
- preps command intel training, plan and integrate intel, counterintel, operational security and IPB
What is the role of the mighty S-3?

- preps and supervises the execution of training w/in command

- preps, coordinates, authenticates and distributes the command SOP, OPLAN, OPORD, FRAGO and WARNO
