An interpersonal relationship between two persons that is mutually productive, established and maintained through perceived mutual free choice, and characterized by mutual positive regard.
Friendship
A selfless, compassionate love.
Agape
A stage in some relationships that involves recognizing problems and engaging in productive conflict resolution.
Interpersonal repair
A relationship in which an experienced individual helps train someone who is less experienced; for example, an accomplished teacher might mentor a younger teacher who is newly arrived or has never taught before.
Mentoring
Connecting with people who can help you accomplish a goal or help you find information related to your goal; for example, to help with your search for a job.
Networking
A group of people who consider themselves related and connected to one another.
Family
A stage in some relationship that involves separation followed by social or public separation.
Dissolution
A type of friendship based on loyalty, self-sacrifice, and equality.
Reciprocity
One of the qualities defining interpersonal relationships.
Personally established rules
A theory that describes relationships as defined by a series of competing opposite desires or motivations, such as the desires for autonomy and belonging, for novelty and predictability, and for closeness and openness.

The six stages of relationships include contact, involvement, intimacy, repair, deterioration, and dissolution.
Formulate messages that are appropriate to the stage of the relationship. Also, listen to messages from relationship partners that may reveal differences in perceptions about your relationships.
