COM110 Lesson 3 Key Terms Flashcards
Empathic listening or objective listening
When you punctuate the interaction from the speaker’s point of view, engage in dialogue, and seek to understand the speaker’s thoughts and feelings.
Active listening
The process by which a listener expresses his or her total understanding of the speaker’s message, including the verbal and nonverbal, the thoughts, and feelings.
Receiving
Focus attention on both the verbal and nonverbal message; both communicate essential parts of the total meaning.
Understanding
Relate new information to what you already know, ask questions, and paraphrase what the speaker said to make sure you understand.
Remembering
Identifying the central ideas, summarizing the message in an easier-to-retain form, and repeating ideas (aloud or to yourself) to help you remember.
Evaluating
Trying first to understand fully what the speaker means and then looking to identify any biases or self-interests that might lead the speaker to give an unfair presentation.
Responding
Expressing support for the speaker using I-messages instead of you-messages.
Feedback
Listen to both verbal and nonverbal feedback—from yourself and from others—and use these cues to help you adjust your message.
Primacy and recency
Giving more importance to that which occurs first (primacy) or to that which occurs last or more recently (recency).
