Colostomy and Ileostomy Flashcards
Surgically constructed opening from an internal body organ to the exterior of the body
Ostomy
A person who had an ostomy
Ostomate
Opening on the skin by the surgical construction from the body organ to the exterior of the body
Stoma
Types of Ostomy
Temporary Ostomy
Permanent Ostomy
Ileostomy
Colostomy
Types of Ostomy
Chronic bowel disease requires rest periods to heal
Temporary Ostomy
Types of Ostomy
Indications: chronic bowel inflammation (enterocolitis, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, Traumatic injury)
Temporary Ostomy
Types of Ostomy
Severe bowel injury requires reconstructive surgery
Temporary Ostomy
Types of Ostomy
Malignancy of the rectum or the lower bowel
Permanent Ostomy
Types of Ostomy
Indications: rectal cancer, colon cancer, birth defects (imperforate anus)
Permanent Ostomy
Types of Ostomy
Standard or brooke
Continent
Ileostomy
Types of Ostomy
Ascending
Transverse
Descending
Sigmoid
Colostomy
An opening in the belly (abdominal wall) that’s made during surgery
Ileostomy
It’s usually needed because a problem is causing the ileum to not work properly, or a disease is affecting that part of the colon and it needs to be removed.
Ileostomy
Once the incision is made, the ileum is pulled through the abdomen
A rod is placed under the loop
The portion of the intestine is flipped open to expose the interior surface
The opposite side is stitched in place to the skin of the abdomen
Standard or Brook Ileostomy
Also empties from the ileum. But using an abdominal pouch. A pouch of the ileum is formed to serve as a reservoir for feces
A nipple valve is formed onto the skin
Continent Ileostomy
A reversible surgical procedure that provides a new path for waste material and gas to leave the body after a part of the colon or rectum is removed because of disease or injury
Colostomy
A type of colostomy is usually used in emergencies and is a temporary and large stoma
A loop of the bowel is pulled out onto the abdomen and held in place with an external device
Loop Colostomy
The bowel is then sutured to the abdomen and two openings are created in the one stoma: one for stool and other for mucus
Loop Colostomy
The bowel is severed and both ends are brought out onto the abdomen
Only the proximal stoma is functioning
Double-Barrel Colostomy
A stoma is created from one end of the bowel
The other portion of the bowel is either removed or sewn shunt (Hartmann’s pouch)
End Colostomy
Complications of Ileostomy
Skin problems, irritation
Food blockage
Diarrhea
Dehydration
Retraction of the skin
Peristomal hernia
Prolapse
Stenosis
Complications of Colostomy
Retraction of the skin
Peristomal hernia
Prolapse
Stenosis
Complication of Ileostomy and Colostomy
Stoma goes down to the skin level or below the skin level
Retraction of the skin
Complication of Ileostomy and Colostomy
Bowel becomes longer and protrudes out of the stoma and above the abdomen surface
Prolapse
Complication of Ileostomy and Colostomy
Part of the bowel bulges into the area around the stoma
Peristomal Hernia
Complication of Ileostomy and Colostomy
Narrowing and tightening of the stoma below the skin level
Stenosis
Characteristics of Stoma Discharge
Produces liquid fecal drainage, constant, and cannot be regulated
Ileostomy
Characteristics of Stoma Discharge
Similar to ileostomy drainage is liquid and cannot be regulated digestive enzymes are present
Ascending Colostomy
Characteristics of Stoma Discharge
Produces malodorous, mushy drainage because some liquid has been reabsorbed. Usually no control
Transverse Colostomy
Characteristics of Stoma Discharge
Produces solid fecal drainage
Descending Colostomy
Fecal are normal or formed in consistency
Sigmoidectomy
Stoma color
Red, similar in color to the mucosal lining of the inner check

Types of Colostomy
- Loop Colostomy
- Double-Barrel Colostomy
- End Colostomy
It is a way to regulate bowel movements by emptying the colon at a scheduled time
The process of involves infusing water into the colon through the stoma
Colostomy Irrigation
This stimulates the colon to empty. By repeating this process regularly, once a day or once every second day, the colon can be trained to empty with no spillage of waste in between irrigation
