Colorectal Adenocarcinoma etiology?
Risk Factors:
adenomatous polyps,
long-standing ulcerative colitis,
low-fiber diet,
old age,
Epidemiology positive family history,
hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC),
familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)
Colorectal Adenocarcinoma Epidemiology?
Most commonly occurs between the ages of 60 and 80
Colorectal Adenocarcinoma gross fx?
Appearance varies from:
1. polypoid mass (proximal colon) to
- lesions with ulcerated centers and irregular margins that circumscribe bowel (distal colon)
Colorectal Adenocarcinoma histo fx?
- Dysplastic columnar cells in glandular formation;
- may produce mucin,
- some tumors may be anaplastic
Colorectal Adenocarcinoma clinical signs?
Can be asymptomatic;
if symptomatic, presents with: pallor, weight loss, intermittent diarrhea, LLQ pain obstruction
Colorectal Adenocarcinoma Lab findings?
Positive stool guaiac test;
increased serum CEA;
microcytic, hypochromic anemia (iron deficiency anemia secondary to GI bleed)
Colorectal Adenocarcinoma Treatment?
Surgical resection;
chemotherapy (5-FU)
