Colorectal cancer staging
stage 1: does not invade full thickness of bowel wall. no lymph node involvement
stage 2: full thickness of bowel wall, lymph nodes not involved
stage 3: lymph nodes involved
stage 4: metastatic tumours
Colon cancer management
surgical resection of the primary tumour and regional lymph nodes
no advantage of adjuvant chemotherapy for stage 1 or stage 2a cancer
rectal cancer management
stage 1 undergo surgery for total mesorectum resection
other stages require a combination of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery
adjuvent chemotherapy for colorectal cancer
stage 2b stage 3 and stage 4 disease are all treated with chemotherapy
5-flurouracil based therapy
capecitabine based therapy
