Puritans
group of religious dissidents who came to the New World so they would have a location to establish a “purer” church than the one that existed in England
Separatists
religious group that opposed the Church of England; this group first went to Holland, and then some went on to the Americas
indentured servants
individuals who exchanged compulsory service for free passage to the American colonies
Huguenot
French Protestants who believed in Calvininsim by the 1630s. Some ended up settling in America but the French believed they would disrupt the colonies
Jesuit
Missionaries who were in Flordia, New Mexico, and Paraguay within the French territories of America. They organized with order and military precision.
Franciscan
missionaries who established settlements in the Southwestern US in the late 1500s; at their missions, Christian conversion was encouraged, however, Natives were also used as slaves. Rebellions against the missions began in 1598.
London Company
In 1603, King James I gave the London Company a charter to settle Virginia. In April 1607, the first settlers arrived at Jamestown.
