A

Atelectasis

What are the clinical features of collapse on an X-ray?

A

White grey shadow
Loss of volume
Shifting of structures (significant collapse)
Total collapse may pull mediastinum towards affected side

What are the clinical features of collapse during auscultation?

A

Quiet breath sounds if occluded bronchus or bronchial breath if patent bronchus
Fine end respiratory crackles with smaller atelectasis

What can cause collapse?

A
Shallow breathing 
Bronchial obstruction
Absorption of trapped gas
Surfactant depletion
Compression from external pressure such as pleural disorder
Abdominal/ cardio thoracic surgery
