  • After an American U2 plane was shot down (killing one man) the US and Soviets agreed to remove threatening nuclear missiles (US from Turkey; Soviets from Cuba).
  • Afterward the US and Soviet created the Moscow Washington Hotline and signed the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.
