two people living together in the same residence whilst also being apart of an intimate romantic relationship.
What is marriage?
the legal union of two people as a partnership.
What is divorce?
legal termination of a marriage by a court or other competent body.
What does LAT stand for?
living apart together
What are LAT relationships?
those who are in committed relationships or married but live at different addresses.
How has the changing role of women impacted the trend of the three concepts?
Women are more financially independent, so they no longer need a relationship to be secure. Women can afford to cohabit and/or wait to marry. Women in longer feel pressured to remain in unhappy relationships.
How has secularisation impacted trends?
divorce and cohabitation are less frowned upon. People no longer feel the need to have a religious ceremony for their wedding.
How have social changes impacted trends?
People have higher expectations of their marriage. Cohabitation allows individuals to experience what married life would be like with their partner prior to committing fully.

How have economic factors impacted trends?
Women are more financially independent. Cohabitation save money to afford a house. Weddings are expensive, £30,000 average in 2018.
How has postmodernity impacted trends?
Giddens- pure relationships- individuals seek the perfect relationship, which deters marriage
How have changes in the family impacted trends?
Conjugal roles are become more joint, as individuals have higher expectations of marriage.
