Cognitive treatments of Depression Flashcards
What is CBT and what does it do
Cognitive behavioural therapy
-adjust patients thinking focusing on the impact of thoughts on behaviour
CBT: therapists develops a…….
trusting relationship with patient so they’re comfortable disclosing info
CBT: therapist lets patients….
freely explain issues
CBT: Identify common issues by….
using thought catching
CBT: therapist challenges ideas by using what techniques
beliefs disputed using techniques such as
logical disputing
empirical disputing
pragmatic disputing
CBT: develop strategies to cope with their issues using:
homework
behavioural activation
keeping a diary
define logical disputing
challanging whether this idea actually makes sense in its application
define empirical disputing
questioning whether there’s any evidence that this belief is accurate
define pragmatic disputing
questioning whether this belief will actually help them
CBT: Define homework
participants have to do things in between sessions to push their irrational thoughts out/practice replacing them with rational thoughts
define behavioural activation
patients are expected to engage in more pleasurable activities that they used to enjoy
define keeping a diary
patients note times when thoughts occur so therapist identifies commonalities and situations that can be targeted
Rational Emotive Therapy Ellis (1991)
states that it treats depression using
D?
E?
F?

Feelings
DEF: D stands and means?
Disrupting
teach the client to CHALLENGE the irrational beliefs
DEF: E stands for and means?
Effective
replacing the irrational with rational EFFECTIVLEY
DEF: F means and stands for?
Feelings
this produces nice feelings/positive emotions
Strengths of cognitive therapies for depression
P: Cbt is tailored to the needs of the client treating the cause of depression.
E: During the process of CBT, patients express the causes of their specific depression as part of thought catching to which the therapist tailors a specific treatment plan to disrupt.
E:This enables them to specifically target the issue causing their depression meaning that treatment will be more effective and long term.Conversely, drugs are a genetic treatment that isn’t tailored for a patients needs.
L:Therefore CBT is more appropriate as it treats for the cause of the symptoms
-Supported by Thase et al (2007) as it shows that CBT is equally as effective as all other treatments suggesting that therapy must be effective in treating aspects of the disorder
Limitation of treatment for depression
P:CBT is not accessible to all people.
E:CBT requires the patient to attend sessions over a period of time at a high cost for treatment to have an effect.
E:However this is an issue as people may not be able to afford this cost.
L:In contrast, drug treatments may be more appropriate as these are treated and patients aren’t required to attend additional sessions. Cbt might not be appropriate in all cases
