What is a phobia
A type of anxiety disorder usually defined as a persistent fear of an object or situation
What do people with a phobia do
Go to great lengths in avoiding, (typically disproportional to the actual danger posed) often being recognized as irrational

Fear - this tends to be persistent excessive and unreasonable
Anxiety - a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome
Panic - sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety, often causing wildly unthinking behavior
What are the behavioral characteristics of Phobias
These characteristics interferes with routine, occupation, social activities and even relationship - making it a genuine mental illness
•Avoidance - to stay away from something
•Freeze - to stand still in a state of panic
•Feel faint - to feel weak and dizzy
What is depression
A mood disorder when an individual feels sad and/or lacks interest in their usual activities
what is an emotional characteristic of depression
a diagnosis requires 5 of these symptoms for over 2 weeks
-sadness
-loss of intrest from usual activities
-lack of pleasure from normal activities
-feeling empty
-feeling worthless
-low self-esteem
-anger
what is a cognitive characteristic of depression
irrational negative thoughts such as:
-negative self-beliefs
-guilt
-worthlessness
-negative view of the world
-lack of concentration

-activity level
-reduced energy
-tiredness or restless
-some sleep a lot (hypersomnia)
-others cannot sleep at all (insomnia)
-loss of appetite
what is OCD
obsessive compulsive disorder
-anxiety arises from obsessions (persistent thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviours)
