Cognitive theories Flashcards
Personal construct theory developed by
George A. Kelly
constructive alternativism
key idea: is how each of us see the world is unique to each of us
Idiographic level of analysis
Fundamental postulate
a persons processes are psychologically channelised by the ways in which he anticipates events

Sociality
construction collary
a person anticipates events by construing their replications
dichotomy corollary
a persons construction system is composed of a finite number of dichotomous constructs
- binary or bipolar
range (of convenience) corollary
a construct is convenient for the anticipation of a finite range of events only
Organisation corollary
each person characteristically evolves, for his convenience in anticipating events, a construction system embracing ordinal relationships between constructs
Basis of stereotyping
individuality corollary
persons differ from each other in their construction of events
Don’t apply objective scheme
Characterise individual scheme
Commonality corollary
to the extent that one person employs a construction of experience which is similar to that employed by another, his psychological processes are similar to the other person,
- emphasise is to share similar constructions
- seek validations from people
sociality corollary
to the extent that one person construes the construction processes of another, he may play a role in a social process involving the other person
- share constructs to socially coordinate
Fragmentation corollary
a person may successively employ a variety of construction subsystems which are inferentially incompatible with each other
Experience corollary
a persons construction system varies as he successively construes the (non-)replication of events
- if anticipations fails, constructs can change
- evidence now modifies theory
Modulation corollary
the variation in a persons construction system is limited by the permeability of the constructs within whose range of convenience the variants lie
choice corollary
a persons chooses for himself that alternative in a dichotomized construct through which he antipates the greater possibility for extension and definition of his system
choice corollary
a person chooses for himself that alternative in a dichotomized construct through which he anticipates the greater possibility for extension and definition of his system
Implications of feelings and behaviour
- constructs can be in the process of transition in many cases
- psychopathology - any personal construction which is used repeatedly in spire of consistent invalidation
- therapy - role playing - imaging new alternatives, encourage experimentation and pretend to be another person
- role construct repertory test - self-discovery tool, select several elements, pick 3 at a time, repeater to generate constructs and df consolidate based on overlap
