Cognitive Neuroscience History Flashcards
What is introspection?
Look inside and see the contents of the mind
what are the limitations of introspection?
Difficult to verify, it misses unconscious thoughts and processes (focus on end product)
what is the main principle of behaviourism?
Study only what is observable
what are the limitations of behaviourism?
It does not account for creativity or language
what is the principle of cognitivism?
It is based on the computer analogy. It makes inferences about mental processes.
What are the contributions of cognitivism?
artificial neural networks, AI systems and parallel processing
What is cognitive psychology?
the study of processes and products of the mind. It creates models and makes inferences about them
What is neuroscience?
the study of the biology of the brain and its organizaion
Why should cognitive psychology and neuroscience be studied together?
Because cog psyc looks at patterns of nehaviour and neuroscience relates them with brain activation: localization of function (LoF)
Where is the Broca’s area?
Left frontal lobe
What does Broca’s area do?
Language production
Where is Wernicke’s area?
Left temporal lobe
What does Wernicke’s area do?
Language comprehension
What does the corpus callosum do?
Communicate both hemispheres
Which part f the brain did patient with severe epilepsy get removed?
Bilateral temporal lobes
