cognitive explanations A01 Flashcards
what do cognitive explanations for schizophrenia emphasise?
they emphasise the role of dysfunctional thought processing evident in those who have positive symptoms of sz, such as hallucinations and delusions
define dysfunctional thought processing
cognitive beliefs and habits that cause the individual to interpret information in the wrong way.
what do cognitive explanations focus on?
the role of dysfunctional thought processing in schizophrenic symptoms
what is the cognitive explanation for delusions?
the individual sees themselves as the central component in events that happen and so relate irrelevant events to themselves such as hearing voices would be seen as people criticising them.
what does it mean by schizophrenics having an ‘impaired insight?’
an inability to recognise distortions of reality and substitute more realistic explanations for the events. for example, hearing voices is simply hearing voices, not that they are criticising you.
what is the cognitive explanation for hallucinations?
schizophrenics often hyper focus on auditory stimuli ( hearing) and so have a higher expectancy for hearing voices than normal people.
what does Aleman suggest?
that hallucination prone people find it difficult to distinguish between imagery and sensory based perception.
what do Baker and Morrison argue?
they argue that hallucinating sz patients are more likely to distort the source of a self made hearing experience to an external source such as other people than non-hallucinating sz patients.
