Cognitive Behaviorism Flashcards
What is Cognitive Behaviorism
The principle that by changing our thinking patterns, we can change our feelings and behavior
Who made Cognitive Behaviorism?
Albert Ellis
What are irrational beliefs?
Thinking pattern that are self defeating, negative thoughts that create a negative feeling and behavior
People say an event or thing causes a feeling. What does Ellis say to dispute this?
Our feelings are caused by our belief system, not the event itself. The activating event happens, our belief system comes in, and then the consequences come which either reinforce or suppress our beliefs
What does Ellis say should be done about irrational beliefs?
Recognize them, confront them, dispute them, and replace with more rational belief
What is Covert Reinforcement
Using positive imagery to reinforce a desired behavior- AKA manifestation
