B.F Skinner - Operant Conditioning Flashcards
What is operant conditioning?
Learning that occurs due to consequences of our behavior
If we receive reward for our behavior, we are most likely to:
Repeat the behavior
If we receive punishment for our behavior, we are most likely to:
Not repeat
What is reinforcement
A reward that makes it more likely to repeat a behavior
What’s an example of reinforcement?
Food, praise, attention, money, almost anything
What is shaping?
Rewarding/ reinforcing behaviors similar to the desired outcome. Ex. Going from smoking 5 times a day to 4 times, 3 times, etc.
What is continuous reinforcement?
Reinforcing for every correct behavior
What are the four partial reinforcement schedules?
Fixed ratio schedule, Variable ratio schedule, Fixed interval schedule, Variable interval schedule
What is fixed ratio schedule?
Reinforcer happens once a certain amount of tasks are completed, like commission work
What is variable ratio schedule?
Reinforcer happens once an average number of behaviors are completed, like gambling
What is fixed interval schedule?
Reinforcer happens once at a specific time, like payday, vacation days, etc.
What is variable interval schedule?
Reinforcer happens once at an average time, like pop quiz, workplace check ins
What is the work rate for a fixed interval schedule? What is the extinction rate?
Work rate = moderate , Extinction rate = behavior stops quickly once reinforcer stops
What is the work rate for a variable interval schedule? Extinction rate?
Work rate= slow , extinction rate = behavior continues a while after reinforcer goes away
What is the work rate for a fixed ratio schedule? Extinction rate?
Work rate = hard, extinction rate = behavior stops quickly once reinforcer stops
