Cognitive Approach Flashcards
When was the cognitive approach developed?
1950s
Why was the cognitive approach developed?
Response to behaviourism as cognitive psychologists disagreed with this because thoughts are too important to be ignored even if it is not observable or measurable
What are the 3 key elements of the cognitive approach?
Schema and scripts
Theoretical models
Cognitive neuroscience
Describe the nature-nurture debate
it’s as interactionist approach - behaviour influenced by learning & experience but our brains innate capacities as info processors
SCHEMA & SCRIPTS
SCHEME & SCRIPTS
What does ‘schema’ mean?
to organise thoughts - is developed overtime & is constantly updated
What are ‘scripts’
a type of schema which helps humans understand what todo in certain situations
What is the key thing to know about schema
it is the mental framework of knowledge abut the world
THEORETICAL MODELS
THEORETICAL MODELS
What is the brain a model of & why?
a computer because it has loads of mental processes so a computer gives a clearer understanding
How have computer models helped psychologists?
allowed them to theorise about thought processes and these assumptions are tested by lab or brain scanning
What are the two models?
Multistore model of memory
Filter theory of perception
Why did the stoop test start?
was used to see if attention is limited
Was this theory correct?
yes as it is difficult to focus attention on one thing when humans are conflicting inputs - stoop test is useful for prompting research
COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE
COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE
What did neuroscientists study?
the living brain & gain detailed info about it’s structures in different kinds or mental processes
What techniques were used to study the brain?
> fMRI - functional magnetic resonance imaging
>PET - position emission tomography
What type of techniques are these?
non-invasive
By using these techniques it helps psychologists understand….?
brain supports different cognitive activities & emotions and shows what parts of the brain become active in different circumstances
COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGIST VIEWS
COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGIST VIEWS
What type of determinism view does the cognitive approach have?
soft determinism view - humans don’t choose goals to our behaviour but choose how we get there
Does the cognitive approach have a free will perspective?
it has a free will perspective so it can choose both - ends and the means
