The two key sub-systems in the interacting cognitive subsystems approach (Teasdale and Barnard, 1993) are the:
a. Propositional and implicational systems
b. Conscious and unconscious systems
c. Priming and elaboration systems
a. Propositional and implicational systems
Describe the five components of Beck’s cognitive model in the correct order and indicate between which two components a negative event would have it’s most direct effect.
Learning experiences lead to Negative schemas which can lead to the activation of assumptions (by a triggering negative event) which leads to Dysfunctional cognitions which leads to Anxiety / depression
The Autobiographical Memory Test shows that depressed people have difficulty retrieving which of the following:
a. Semantic association to cue word
b. Specific memory related to cue word
c. General memory related to cue word
b. Specific memory related to cue word
Briefly explain Beck’s cognitive model for depression (include: dysfunctional assumptions, early experience)
Early (negative) experiences leads to formulation of dysfunctional assumptions and schemata. These guide the way we see the world and determine what we think. When a negative event occurs these schemas are activated easier and the dysfunctional assumption is confirmed or activated. Leads to negative cognitives / depression.
