Cognative KQ Flashcards
What is the Cognitive key question?
How can psychologists understanding of memory help dementia patients?
Why is it the cognitive key question?
- Dementia is a growing issue
- 44 million people worldwide suffer with dementia
- cost the economy over £360 Billion
- Each dementia patient cost £28500 per year
- Currently no treatment
How does knowledge from cognitive psychology apply to dementia?
Tulving LTM - Episodic memories (Autobiographical) are affected before semantic (factual) explains why dementia patients loss most recent memories first - Diaries and notes can aid this
Baddeley - Dementia study found that they struggled with dual tasks (verbal + visual) Therefore when speaking to a dementia patient make sure there is no external distraction so they can focus on what you are saying
What are the limitations to how much cognitive psychology can help dementia patients?
- Tulving - Casestudy = less reliable
- These models only tell us strategies not a cure
- Theories oversimplified = limit findings
- Lack EV as the tasks are artificial
Summary of cognitive KQ
Can only explain to an extent as only gives stratergies to help not a cure
Tells us that dementia is worldwide issue that can be explained partially by cognitive psychologists
However studies are oversimplified + lack EV
Tulving explains that external memory sources can help patients remember recent events
